The project

This video has no client. It is a personal project from BM Produccions, a technical and creative exercise born from the desire to push the boundaries of 3D modelling applied to real engineering, and to pay tribute to one of the most extraordinary machines humanity has ever built.

The Saturn V is the largest and most powerful rocket in history. At 110 metres tall, with five separable stages and over three million components in its complete configuration, it represents one of the most complex 3D modelling challenges we have ever taken on. Every part, from the F-1 engines of the first stage to the command capsule, was modelled from technical documentation and NASA archives.

The modelling: six stages, one machine

The Saturn V is made up of six main components, each with a specific function within the mission. The modelling process followed the same logical order as the original engineering: bottom to top, from propulsion to crew.

01

S-IC. First stage

The largest stage of the rocket. Five F-1 engines, 42 metres tall and enough thrust to lift 2,800 tonnes from the ground. We modelled every engine, the support arms and the characteristic "USA" lettering on the structure.

S-II. Second stage

Five liquid hydrogen J-2 engines. The second stage is the most slender proportionally and the hardest to light: its metallic finish and black-and-white bands are the most recognisable element of the rocket from a distance.

S-IVB. Third stage

A single J-2 engine that performed two burns: the first to reach Earth orbit and the second for trans-lunar injection. We modelled the detail of the lunar module panels inside the protective fairing.

Service module

The service propulsion system and solar panels that powered the mission's electronics. A compact cylinder housing all the life-support infrastructure for the journey between Earth and the Moon.

Command module

The conical capsule where the three astronauts travelled for most of the mission. The only component that returned to Earth. We modelled the heat shield, windows and parachute system in detail.

Launch escape tower

The emergency escape system at the top of the rocket. An essentially dramatic structure, designed to never have to be used, that defines the characteristic silhouette of the Saturn V.

The asset sheet: Project Apollo components

Part of the creative process involved documenting and cataloguing each modelled component in the visual style of NASA's technical files from the 1960s. The result is an asset sheet collecting the six main elements with their original designations.

This type of composition, combining the technical precision of 3D modelling with a visual treatment inspired by period aerospace documentation, is one of the visual languages we find most interesting to explore at BM Produccions. The archive aesthetic gives CGI a historical dimension that a plain render alone cannot achieve.

The visual treatment: three languages for one machine

The video explores three distinct visual approaches to the same object. Each reveals a different dimension of the rocket: its monumentality, its technical complexity and its historical weight.

Cinematic and lunar

The Saturn V in silhouette against the full moon. Hard light, black background, no colour. The most iconic image of the project, designed to communicate monumentality and historical reference in a single frame.

Technical and editorial

Exploded stage view and asset sheet inspired by NASA documentation. Neutral grey background, diffuse light, desaturated palette. A visual language that appeals to engineering and historical archive.

Artistic and visceral

X-ray treatment on a dark blue background. The rocket's components appear as luminous objects in motion, stripped of their physical context. A way of seeing the machine from the inside out.

What this project demonstrates

The Saturn V is the kind of project that has no client. No brief, no brand, no deadline. That makes it possibly the most demanding of all, because the only measure of success is honesty to the reference.

For BM Produccions, this video demonstrates that CGI can handle objects of any technical complexity: from a perfume bottle to a rocket with three million parts. The discipline is the same, documentary reference, precise modelling, material control, composition. What changes is the scale.
